Research Software Camp: Beyond the Spreadsheet

Our Research Software Camp: Beyond the Spreadsheet took place from 1st to 12th November 2021.

We focussed on the uses of spreadsheets in research and the next steps into further use of software in research.

Our events and resources collated different perspectives, experiences, and best practices in the use of spreadsheets, as well as signposted to existing resources.

We ran a parallel social media campaign on the use of spreadsheets in research, which can be accessed using #RSCamps on Twitter.

Watch this intro video on our YouTube channel about Camp's activities.

All of the sessions were free and online.

We are dedicated to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for all people, regardless of background or identity. Please make sure you have read and understood our Code of Conduct before signing up to our events.

Below, we have also included a list of the people who make the Research Software Camps possible.

Our panel discussion “Do we have the right tools for research?” took place online on Friday 5th November 2021. Our expert panelists discussed the use of spreadsheets in research, spreadsheets as powerful tools to handle data, and what’s available for researchers who wish to move beyond spreadsheets. We presented as many views as possible from using spreadsheets as a powerful tool in research data management to discussing options for moving beyond them.

We hosted free online live workshops and recorded presentations as part of the Research Software Camp: Beyond the Spreadsheet. All of the workshops and presentations were prepared and delivered by the speakers at the panel discussion "Do we have the right tools for research?" Our workshops included an introduction to OpenRefine, Filament, R, MatLab, and Google Sheets. Our presentations introduced Microsoft Lambda, Python and the perspective of a researcher who uses spreadsheets.

The Code Review Clinic ran from 8-12 November 2021 with one session in the morning and one in the afternoon from Monday to Friday. Our aim was to allow first time/beginner coders to get general but targeted feedback on their code from an expert.
