Sammie Buzzard

SSI fellow

Northumbria University

Sammie Buzzard is a glaciologist in the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM) at Northumbria University. Her research focusses on the surface hydrology of Antarctica's ice shelves, and modelling how and where ice shelves may become vulnerable to sudden collapse. This is important in determining Antarctica's contribution to global sea level. She also has interests in Greenland sub-surface hydrology and snow and melt on Arctic sea ice.

Sammie completed her PhD in Reading University's Department of Meteorology. Following postdoctoral work at UCL and Georgia Tech (USA) she was a lecturer at Cardiff University before joining CPOM in Northumbria in 2023, where she is also the Director for Knowledge Exchange for the centre.

Sammie was a 2020 IASC Cryosphere fellow and also a fellow of the Software Sustainability Institute. In 2023 she was awarded the International Glaciological Society's Early Career Award and is regularly engaged in science communication and EDI work.
