Research
I am currently a freelance data scientist and software developer, working principally with geographic data. My background is in academia, and I have a PhD from the University of Southampton in atmospheric remote sensing (satellite imaging) and my undergraduate degree was in Geography.
I am active in open-source development, and have developed a Python interface to an important atmospheric radiative transfer model which is widely used and has been cited over 60 times (Py6S - http://www.py6s.rtwilson.com/). I have been involved in various reproducibility efforts including developing recipy (http://recipy.org/) and originating the CITATION file concept.
My freelance work has included consulting, training and development around Py6S, interactive mapping and graphing of real-time air quality data and large-scale analysis of mobile phone data for humanitarian purposes. I still work closely with academic colleagues on a variety of projects.
