Registration now open for the second round of Research Software Practices in the Social Sciences workshops

Registration is now open for the next two workshops in the Research Software Practices in the Social Sciences series. Both workshops are scheduled for November. The first will take place Wednesday 13 and focus on reproducible analysis in Python. The second will take place Tuesday 19 and tackle data cleanup of large datasets using OpenRefine. If you are interested in attending one or both events, please register your interest by 24h before the start.

Python is the most used coding language in a variety of settings. For mid-November we prepared a one-day online workshop, to introduce Python as a coding language and useful analytical tool in the social sciences studies. During the workshop, the instructor will practically demonstrate (i.e. through live coding) the basics of this coding language, including key points of the standard Python workflow like exploring datasets, performing basic summary statistics and visualisations, and exporting project results. Certificates of completion will be issued to those attending this workshop.

Our instructor

Dr. Danai Korre is a lecturer in computer science at the School of Computer Science and Technology, University of Bedfordshire, and an experienced and published CS researcher. Danai has a long track record of teaching a variety of subjects, chief being coding languages for data analysis.

When & where

Wednesday 13 November, from 9:30 am till 1:30 pm (including breaks). The workshop will take place online via Zoom. If you do not have it installed yet, please download Zoom here.

Requirements

No prior knowledge of Python is needed to participate; however, installing Anaconda Navigator is recommended to take the most out of the workshop, especially to follow the instructor by replicating the code demonstrated. It can be downloaded from this link, with the installation process best explained in the YT video here. The SSI team will help with possible installation issues on your personal or workplace device. There will be open drop-in sessions hosted each week leading to the workshop.

OpenRefine (formerly GoogleRefine) is a software specifically designed to deal with the hurdles of assessing the quality of and cleaning very large data sets, including the automatisation of this process for multiple similarly designed datasets. During this short 2 hours long online workshop the instructor will demonstrate how to work with OpenRefine, from creating a project and assessing the data through filtering and sorting as well as associated functions to using General Refine Expression Language for writing scripts to automate the data cleaning process. Certificates of completion will be issued to those attending this workshop.

Our instructor

Beyond being the project manager for this series of workshops, Dr. Andrzej Romaniuk is a published researcher, combining archaeology and evolutionary biology with data analysis in R, and an experienced academic teacher, with a track record in teaching entry-level workshops on working with data for a variety of audiences.

When & where

Tuesday 19 November, from 11 am till 1 pm (including 10 min break in the middle). The workshop will take place online via Zoom. If you do not have it installed yet, please download Zoom here.

Requirements

No prior knowledge of OpenRefine is needed to participate; however, the installation of this software is recommended to take the most out of the workshop and be able to follow the instructor. The newest OpenRefine version can be downloaded using this link. The SSI team will help with possible installation issues on your personal or workplace device. There will be open drop-in sessions hosted each week leading to the workshop.
