Registration is now open for the first two workshops in the Research Software Practices in the Social Sciences series. The workshops will take place Tuesday 15 October and Tuesday 22 October and will focus respectively on introducing SQL and R. If you are interested in attending one or both events, please register your interest by 24h before the start.

Search Query Language (SQL) is widely used for database creation, manipulation and (useful) data extraction. For October we prepared a one-day online workshop, to introduce SQL as a useful tool in the social sciences research. During the workshop, all key steps in a standard SQL workflow will be practically demonstrated, from opening and working with a database, through writing queries and dealing with missing values, to aggregating data and using joins to take advantage of multiple datasets. Certificates of completion will be issued to those attending this workshop.

Our instructor

Dr. Rosie Eccleston is an experienced data analyst and software skills teacher, with years of experience in various fields, from zoology and government advising to leading data-heavy projects for public and private companies.

When & where

Tuesday 15 October, from 10 am till 2 pm (including breaks). The workshop will take place online via Zoom. If you do not have it installed yet, please download Zoom here.

Requirements

No prior knowledge of SQL is needed to participate; however, the installation of DB Browser is recommended to take the most out of the workshop. SQLite, a basic distribution of SQL accessible within the DB Browser, will be utilised during live coding. DB Browser can be downloaded and installed from this page. The SSI team will help with possible installation issues on your personal or workplace device. There will be open drop-in sessions hosted each week leading to the workshop.

R is a coding language specifically developed for statistical computing and graphics, commonly used in various research and analytical endeavours. This one-day online workshop aims to introduce R as a useful tool in social sciences research. During the workshop, all key steps in a standard R workflow will be practically demonstrated through live coding, including the introduction of the RStudio coding environment, how to install and load packages, import and explore datasets, perform basic summary statistics and visualisations, ending on exporting project results. Certificates of completion will be issued to those attending this workshop.

Tuesday 22 October, from 10 am till 2 pm (including breaks). The workshop will take place online via Zoom. If you do not have it installed yet, please download Zoom here.

Requirements

No prior knowledge of R or coding is needed to participate; however, installing R and RStudio is recommended to make the most out of the workshop. For the workshop, please prepare a computer with an internet connection and administrative privileges, and install this software in the suggested order: R (this link) and RStudio (this link). When installed, open RStudio, copy and paste the following line “install.packages("tidyverse")” to the software console (bottom left window), and press ENTER. The SSI team will help with possible installation issues on your personal or workplace device. There will be open drop-in sessions hosted each week leading to the workshop.
